The different types of pottery in Candelaria.

The pottery workshops of Candelaria were among the most important in the Canary Islands, both as regards the number of women who were employed and due to the quality of the production; it was even exported to other islands, the Spanish mainland and even America. Depending on the purpose of the vessels, there are four types:
water, fire, household and finally toys.

HOUSEHOLD VESSELS

Among these types of vessels are the Gánigos (used as bowls, for washing crockery, etc.), platos jurados (used for draining Canarian or boiled potatoes) and the lebrillos (for kneading gofio, serving food and even for eating from)..

TOYS

The "cuquitos" are miniature replicas of these vessels. The characteristics of shape are respected although generally the finish is of greater quality than that of the larger vessels as they were painted in red ochre and polished. Apart from the traditional shapes of the vessels, other things were made including cocks, chickens or chicks, which were obviously given to children as toys.
